the poor in our midst

Where lie our allegiance?
Our own people living in squalor
Do the masses crowd in to help?
Look around our cities and towns

Many do need help
Many never get it
They go to sleep hungry
Some without roof over their heads

Because it isn't in the news
Even the people who want to help
They aren't notified...

Though in the city
We find the Kitchen Brigades
They give out food to the needy
And the homeless and drug addicts

Charity must begin at home
That's the way it should happen
Settle our own people in misery
Before we go out to reach for others
